Tryp|to|phan [↑ Trypsin u. ↑ -phan (2)], das; -s, -e; Symbol (für L-T.): Trp, W; Syn.: α-Amino-1H -indol-3-propionsäure: farblose, bitter schmeckende krist. Verb., Smp. 292 °C. Die für den Menschen essentielle Aminosäure ist in pflanzlichen u. tierischen Proteinen relativ selten enthalten u. gegen Säurehydrolyse sehr empfindlich. Sie findet Verwendung zur parenteralen Ernährung, als Antidepressivum u. Schlafmittel sowie als Futtermittelzusatz.

[zu Trypsin und griechisch phaínesthai »erscheinen«] das, -s, Abkürzung Trp, in zahlreichen Proteinen enthaltene essenzielle Aminosäure, die im Organismus zu Skatol abgebaut wird; chemisch die 2-Amino-3-(3-indolyl)-propionsäure; Tagesbedarf des Menschen 0,25 g. Tryptophan wird heute in großem Umfang synthetisch hergestellt und bei der künstlichen Ernährung oder als Futterzusatz verwendet.
